PSL vs Appeal: The Two Looksmaxxing Rating Systems Compared

PSL vs appeal rating: one is strict bone geometry, the other rates overall vibe. How they differ, which is harsher, and what the same face scores on each.
Oct 11, 2026

PSL rates facial structure on a strict 0–8 scale (median 4.0); appeal rating scores overall attractiveness on a looser 1–10 scale. The same face usually reads 1.5–2 points higher on appeal than on a PSL conversion — the two systems measure different things.

The two systems, defined

PSL came out of the PuaHate / SlutHate / Lookism forums (see what PSL means). It is deliberately strict: it reads bone structure — symmetry, thirds, FWHR, canthal tilt, jaw width — on a 0–8 scale with the median anchored at 4.0. Styling, grooming and photo angles don't move it (or shouldn't, if measured honestly).

Appeal rating is the community's looser cousin: a 1–10 score for overall attractiveness including everything — skin, hair, style, vibe, how a photo lands. It's closer to what an ordinary person means by "rating someone." It's the system behind sites like realworldappeal, and behind most casual "rate me" threads.

The same face, both scores

Because appeal inherits casual-rating inflation, conversions run roughly:

PSLTypical appeal reading
4.0 (median)6 – 6.5
5.07 – 7.5
6.08 – 8.5
6.5+9+

Our tool reports both numbers side by side for exactly this reason — comparing your PSL to someone else's appeal 8 is a category error, and half the arguments in rating threads are people doing exactly that.

Which one should you use?

Use PSL when you want a fixed ruler: same lighting, same angle, retake monthly — the delta is real structural signal. Use appeal when you want to know how a photo performs in the wild — a great haircut moves appeal immediately while PSL stays flat.

Neither is "more accurate." They answer different questions. The complete PSL scale guide covers the geometric system in full.
